The Law Around Drug Cases Is Complicated
The primary Mississippi statute used by the government in the prosecution of state-level drug offenses consists of over 3,750 words. By contrast, the most common legal authority used in the prosecution of murder in the Mississippi Code has less than 800 words in it. Simply put, the law surrounding drug cases is not so simple.
And Drug Enforcement Keeps Getting Tougher
The “war on drugs” does not appear to have an end in sight. Consider this: the Mississippi Legislature added more than half a dozen new controlled substances to the Scheduling classifications in 2024. Our lawmakers and government officials are continually finding ways to make things more complicated and to get tougher in drug enforcement.

I attended NACDL’s Annual Defending Modern Drug Cases Conference as the only lawyer from Mississippi to do so. This advanced Continuing Legal Education Program consisted of comprehensive instruction and training related to the latest trends and tactics in representing people accused of numerous varieties of drug offenses.
